new course at kgp...

There have been reports that a new dual degree course B.Tech + MBA is in the offing at IIT Kharagpur. What this means is that one knows one is going to eventually get an MBA degree right when he joins IIT. Quite interesting idea I must say, considering the fact that there is so much heartburn both in the academic world as well as in the industry about the 'wastage' of "talent".

Remember the sage like proclamations of professors on how they dont want us to 'sell soaps' to make a living? In fact this selling soap proverb is so frequently used about the lesser mortals who decided to join management profession that RPian had to say this about one of the guys of the graduating class: This guy is going to sell soaps for a living, literally! The chap had joined HLL.

Here goes a more frustating account. A high ranking executive of Pepsi India had come for a panel discussion in the Spring Fest. I dont remember how the conversation went the way it did, but he talked about the fact that when he goes for recruitment at IIMs, majority of people are from IIT. Junta started clapping on hearing this . But gosh.. this guy had expected somewhat different reaction. He said he was saddened by this fact and that ' you guys should do something better' ! Give me a break! You mean you mint money while people go ahead and join DRDO, only to repent for the rest of their lives?

So what has changed? Not much, it seems. Just that the academicians have turned more pragmatic. After all, if a third of the IIT class takes CAT and if upto 50% of the class in IIMs is composed of IITians, it is time to smell coffee and get real. So why not save an year for the student and in turn make some more money for the institute.

IIT to give IIMs as good as it gets

Statesman News Service
KOLKATA, Sept. 15. — Techies passing out from IIT Kharagpur can no longer be called just that. With the institute of technology introducing a five-year dual degree course to allow students pursue management studies alongside BTech, graduates of this IIT can now hope to give a run for money to their IIM counterparts. This course, to be launched the next academic year, will be offered along with the regular programmes.
IIT Kharagpur authorities hope this will give some competition to the country’s top B schools, namely the IIMs, which draw most of their students from the IITs. “Most of our graduates take the CAT examination to join IIMs. With this five-year dual degree course, they can pursue both BTech and the MBM courses at one go in our institute,” the dean of Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSOM), IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Kalyan Chakravarti, said.
The VGSOM, which is the first management school in the IIT system, plans to take on the IIMs through this new course. A BTech degree usually takes four years and the MBM programme another two. But IITians, opting for this integrated course get a bargain, needing only five years to complete both the courses — allowing them to save a full academic year as well as tuition fees. Besides, an MBA course, tailor-made for commissioned officers of the armed forces, is also on the anvil. The institute is coming up with a research and case development cell (RCDC) as well to study new cases in the industry.

I hope instead of management they should have if introduced engineering economics Masters, that would have been better. I mean, personally I guess Management is an acquired set of skill, it can't be taught. And the class room stuff which they taught at IIMS probably can be covered in Economics.Probabaly I am being bit too much of idealistic.
